Down on Sunjawan Road in the Bathindi area of Jammu, things can get pretty busy in the mornings. You see the yellow buses winding through the streets trying to get the kids here on time. The school sits in a spot where you can see the hills if the weather is clear enough. It’s a big building, and there is always something that needs fixing, like a leaky tap or a door that won't stay shut. We have kids of all ages running around, from the little ones to the teenagers who think they’re already grown up. The hallways are usually filled with the sound of shuffling feet and teachers telling everyone to keep it down. It’s not a perfect place, but it works for everyone involved. We have a playground that gets quite dusty when the wind picks up, but the kids don't seem to care when they are playing football. The staff room is always full of tea cups and stacks of notebooks waiting to be checked. It’s a long day for everyone, especially when the sun is hitting the windows in the afternoon. We just try to get through the syllabus and make sure the kids are learning something useful before the final bell rings. It is a regular school day, nothing more and nothing less. Sometimes the monkeys even come down to look at us from the boundary walls.
