Thahryamal Balchand

Thahryamal Balchand has been situated on M. I. Road for quite a long time. You can find us right opposite the Indian Coffee House, which is a landmark almost everyone in the city knows. Our shop is old-fashioned, and we like it that way. We don't have the bright LED lights or the glass displays you see in the new malls. Instead, we have wooden shelves that are packed to the ceiling with different types of fabrics, especially traditional prints and hand-blocked materials. The floor is old stone, and it stays relatively cool even when it’s hot outside. People come here because they know we have a good variety of stuff that you can't always find in modern stores. We spend our days unfolding cloth for customers to see and then folding it back up again. It is a slow process, but it allows us to talk to people and understand what they are looking for. We don't have a big corporate office or a "vision" we talk about. We just want to keep the shop running like it always has. M. I. Road is always busy with tourists and locals, so there is always someone looking through the window or coming in to browse. It is a simple, traditional business that has stayed the same while the city around it changed.
