Khandelwal Salt Traders

We spend most of our time here at the shop on Surajpole mandi road. It gets pretty dusty with all the trucks coming and going all day long. Dealing with salt isn't exactly clean work but it’s what we do. Every morning we open up and start checking the sacks. The bags are heavy and sometimes the stitching comes loose so we have to fix them. People come in from all over the area looking for different kinds of salt. Some want the fine stuff and others need the big crystals for their animals or for tanning. It’s a lot of physical labor, moving things around and making sure the piles stay dry. When it rains, we have to move fast to cover everything up or it’s a total mess. The mandi road is always loud with people shouting and horns honking. We’ve been here for a while now and we know most of the other shopkeepers around us. We usually just sit on the wooden bench out front when things are slow and watch the traffic. It’s not a fancy life but it keeps us busy. We don’t have any big offices or anything like that. Just the salt and the scales and the people who need what we have. Sometimes the tea man comes by and we take a break for a few minutes. That’s pretty much how the day goes from morning until we lock up the shutters at night.
