H P Bricks

We operate out of Survey No 232/B in Rampally, which is over in the Keesara Mandal part of Ranga Reddy. It’s a gritty business, making bricks. You’ve got the red earth, the water, and the heat of the kilns. Our hands are almost always stained with the color of the clay. It is a large open space where we lay out the rows of bricks to dry in the sun. If it rains unexpectedly, it’s a mad scramble to cover everything up so the work doesn't get ruined. We don't have a polished office; our desk is usually covered in a fine layer of dust from the site. People from around the area come by to check the batches for their construction projects. We just show them what we have piled up. It’s a lot of physical labor, stacking and unstacking, loading the lorries that head out to different parts of the district. The sun can be brutal in the afternoons, so we start very early when it's still cool. There isn't any fancy talk here, just the sound of the workers and the occasional truck backing in. We keep track of the numbers in a simple ledger. It’s just how we’ve always done it. The business is straightforward, and we try to keep the bricks consistent by just paying attention to the mix and the firing time. Most of our days end when the light fails.
