We’ve been over here at the Hotel Shanbagh building in Bashir Bagh for a long time now. This is a busy spot, and people know the 5-9-46 door pretty well. Most days start with us getting everything out of the safes and cleaning the glass cases because fingerprints show up so fast. Plenty of regular customers just drop by when they are in the neighborhood, maybe to get something cleaned or to look at a new ring. Traffic outside gets pretty loud sometimes, but inside it’s just us and the jewelry. Everything from heavy gold sets to smaller things for everyday wear passes through our hands. Some people come in knowing exactly what they want, and others spend hours just trying things on. Dealing with it all is just part of the job. My father used to say that jewelry is just metal until someone wears it, and I think that’s true. Keeping things organized is a challenge on busy afternoons when it gets a bit cluttered behind the counter. Bashir Bagh has changed a lot over the years, with new buildings going up and old shops closing, but we’re still right here in the same place. Closing up usually happens late once the last customer leaves. Showing up and making sure the pieces look good for whoever walks through the door next is what we do. Families have grown up before our eyes, and we've sold wedding sets for kids we remember as toddlers. That makes the long hours feel worth it.
