The yard is usually full of slabs leaning against the walls. We have to be careful how we stack them so nothing tips over. My uncle used to say the stone has its own mind. We spend the day measuring pieces and marking them with chalk for the cutters. The dust gets on everything, even inside the office cabinets. We try to keep things moving so the inventory doesn't just sit there getting covered in grime. Telangana gets hot, and working around all that stone makes it feel even warmer. Most of our customers are locals who are fixing up their houses. They come in and run their hands over the polished surfaces. We talk about the colors and where the stone came from. It’s not always easy keeping the workers happy and the delivery schedules tight. Sometimes a delivery is late because of the traffic near the old city. We just deal with it as it comes. It's a lot of manual labor, but seeing a finished counter makes it feel okay. We keep our records in big ledgers and try to stay on top of the payments. It's a simple operation, really, and we've been part of this street for years now. People know us by our first names here.
