We are over at Mallapur, at house number 4-114/1 in Annapurna Colony. This is a small S B I spot, or more like a service point for the people living nearby. Hyd 76 is a busy area, but our colony stays relatively calm. We don't have the big marble floors or the dozens of tellers you see in the main city banks. It’s just a few of us behind the counter. People come to us for the small things. They want to update their passbooks or put a little bit of money away into their savings. We know the faces of the retirees who come in as soon as we open. The office is simple. We have a few files, a printer that sometimes jams, and a couple of desks. It’s a lot of manual work and checking numbers twice. We don't have a fancy waiting area, just some plastic chairs against the wall. Sometimes the line gets out the door on Mondays. We just keep working through the pile of papers. It’s a quiet kind of life. We talk to the neighbors and hear about what’s going on in the colony. It feels like we are part of the community here rather than just a big institution. We finish up our tallies in the late afternoon and head home. It’s honest, steady work and we like the people we serve. We try to help everyone who walks through the door as best as we can.
