Our office is right on the Main Road in Uppal, which means it’s always loud with the sound of buses and bikes zooming past. We spend most of the day looking at stacks of papers and talking to people on the phone about their bank details. Most folks come in because they need a bit of extra cash for a wedding or maybe to fix a roof that’s leaking. It’s not the most exciting work, sitting under a fan and checking numbers, but it’s what we do here in Andhra Pradesh. Sometimes the internet goes slow and we have to wait for the files to load, which makes everyone a bit grumpy. We’ve got a few desks pushed together and a water cooler that always seems to need a refill. Dealing with loans means a lot of explaining things twice or thrice until it makes sense to everyone involved. People come in worried, and we just try to show them what's possible with the paperwork they brought in their folders. We don't have any fancy suits or big corporate meetings. It’s just us and the files. Most days we eat lunch at our desks while finishing up an application that needs to go out. The 500039 area is pretty busy, so there's always someone walking in with a question about their credit or how long the bank will take to say yes.
