It’s a basic shop where we handle various bits of business for the people in the neighborhood. We don't have a big mission statement or any of that. We just open the shutters in the morning and wait for the first customer. The shop is small and can get a bit cramped when three or four people are inside at once. We have some old wooden counters and a few stools. The walls are covered with some old calendars and notes we’ve scribbled over the months. It’s a busy street, so there is always a layer of dust on the front window. We spend our time counting things, writing in ledgers, and talking to the folks who live nearby. Some people come in just to escape the heat for a minute and have a chat. We don't mind. It makes the day go faster. We aren't looking to expand or become a big chain. This one spot is enough for us to manage. We handle the cash carefully and make sure everything balances at the end of the day. It’s just a regular, honest way to make a living in the city. We close the doors around 9 PM and walk home. Sometimes the street dog comes by for a biscuit we keep in the drawer.
