Kumarikadu is a quiet spot, really. We’re tucked away in Goundanur, which is part of Parundurai Tal. It’s a bit of a drive from the main road, but that works for us because we need the space. We wake up early, usually before the sun is even fully up, to get things moving. The air is cool then, but it doesn't stay that way for long. By ten, the sun is beating down on the open ground where the bricks are laid out. We have these long rows of them drying. It takes time and you can't rush the process. Sometimes the rain catches us off guard and we have to scramble to cover things up with old plastic sheets we keep for emergencies. Most of the people working here live nearby, so we all know each other's families and what’s going on in the village. We aren't doing anything groundbreaking, just the same work day after day. The office is just a tin-roofed room with a fan that makes too much noise. We drink a lot of water and keep the trucks moving out to the sites. If a machine breaks, we usually fix it ourselves with some wire and a wrench. It’s just how things go out here in the countryside. We don’t spend money on advertising. If someone needs bricks for a wall, they just find their way down to our gate and ask.
