Our location at 47/9 on the Vellilamkandam Road is right in the thick of things. Kalthotty isn't a very large place, but everyone seems to know where the spice work happens. We have bags of different things sitting around, and the air always has a bit of a kick to it that makes you sneeze if you aren't used to it. It’s not a polished store with glass displays or bright lights. It’s more of a workspace where we sort and move spices from one place to another. The building is a bit rough around the edges, but it keeps the rain off the stock and gives us a place to work. We spend our mornings checking the weight of things and making sure the labels haven't fallen off the bags during the night. Sometimes the road gets muddy after a big storm, and it makes getting deliveries in and out a real chore for everyone. We’ve been at this for a while, so we know the local growers and the people who pass through looking for specific things. It’s a lot of dusty work, and your clothes usually smell like cumin or pepper by the time you go home at night. We don't use any fancy machinery, just our hands and some old scales. It’s a slow process sometimes, but we aren't in any hurry. The neighborhood is quiet mostly, except for the occasional truck passing through.
