Maheshwari Gram Udyog

Shop No 20 in Samaspur is where we spend all our time. It’s a basic building and we have been here for a good while now. The name Maheshwari Gram Udyog is on the front, though the paint is peeling a little on the edges. We have a lot of stuff piled up inside. Sometimes it looks messy but we know where everything is. The floor is made of that old grey cement and it stays cool in the heat. There isn't much space to walk around if we get a big shipment in. We usually have to stack boxes right up to the ceiling. The street in Samaspur can be quite narrow so getting things delivered is always a bit of a struggle for the drivers. We open early, usually before the sun gets too high. There is a small window at the back that lets in a bit of air. We don't have an air conditioner, just a couple of wall fans that make a lot of noise. People from the nearby houses come in often. We know most of them by name. It’s not a big corporate operation. It’s just a local shop. We handle everything ourselves, from cleaning the front step to counting the stock at night. It’s steady work and it keeps us busy. We don’t really change much about how we do things year to year. It’s just what we do every day to keep things moving along. It is okay.
