Khandelwal Sweet Corner

On the Khichripur Main Road, at 9/251, you’ll find our shop, Khandelwal Sweet Corner. It’s a busy road with a lot of dust and noise from the buses going by. We keep the front of the shop open so people can see the samosas being fried in the big vat of oil. The steam rises up and hangs under the awning, especially in the mornings. We have these metal trays that we fill with different sweets, and we try to keep the flies away with a small electric fan. It’s a simple setup. We have a couple of wooden benches where people can sit for a minute, but most just stand around and talk while they eat. The floor is made of old stone and it’s a bit stained from years of work. We get a lot of laborers and office people who stop by for tea and a snack before they head home. My brother and I take turns at the counter, and we spend a lot of time just chatting with the regulars about the news or the weather. We don't have any fancy signs, just the name of the shop painted on the wall. At night, we pull down the heavy metal shutter and lock it up tight. It’s a lot of standing on your feet all day, but it’s what we know. We’ve been on this road for a long time and seen the neighborhood grow up around us.
