Out here at 313/4 A. Vellodu Main Road in Vedapatty, things are never really quiet. Being a hatchery means there is always some kind of noise, mostly from the birds or the equipment we use to keep things running. Adiyanuthu Post is the main landmark people look for when they are trying to find us. We spend most of our mornings checking the incubators and making sure the eggs are sitting right. It’s a lot of walking back and forth on the dusty paths between the pens. My boots are usually covered in dirt by noon, but that’s just how it goes when you work with animals. We’ve got a small crew here who knows the routine by heart. We don’t spend much time in the office because there is always something to fix or a bird that needs looking after. The main road can get quite loud with the buses passing by, but once you step inside the gates, it’s all about the hatcheries. We deal with a lot of feed bags and cleaning out the spaces every single day. It is hard work, especially when the sun is high, but it is what we do. Sometimes neighbors stop by to chat or ask about the emus. We just keep our heads down and handle the daily breeding tasks. There is a tall fence all around to keep everything secure, and we check the perimeter every evening before we head home.
