You’ll find us at the Anna Fruit Market in Koyambedu. Our specific stall is T D 105. If you’ve ever been to Koyambedu, you know it’s a chaotic place. There are trucks everywhere and people shouting from three in the morning. We deal with fruits, so we have to be there before the sun comes up. The smell of oranges and mangoes is everywhere. It’s a very physical job. We spend all day lifting crates and sorting through the fruit to see what’s good and what’s not. The floor is usually covered in straw and old boxes. It’s noisy and dusty, but it’s the heart of the fruit trade in the city. We don't have a quiet office to sit in. We mostly stand or sit on plastic stools. We eat our breakfast from the local vendors while we wait for the next shipment to arrive. Our clothes usually end up stained with fruit juice by the afternoon. It’s just part of the work. We know all the other sellers in the TD block. It’s like a small community inside a giant market. We don't do much paperwork, just the basics to keep the business running. It’s a tough life but it keeps us moving. We don't have fancy titles or big offices. We just know our fruit and we know the market. By the time the sun sets, we are exhausted but ready for the next day.
