Sunshine Marbles & Granites

Our place is right on P. H. Road in Arumbakkam, number 993. If you’ve ever driven down this way, you’ve probably seen the big slabs of granite standing against the walls. Sunshine Marbles & Granites is a busy spot because the road out front is always moving with cars and buses at all hours. The noise is constant, but you stop noticing it after a week of working here. We have all kinds of stone piled up, some from quite far away. Moving them is the hardest part because if you’re not careful, they can chip or snap, and then that’s a lot of money gone. We don’t have a fancy showroom with spotlights or fancy carpets. We just have the yard and a small office where the fan rattles on high speed. When customers come in, they usually have a piece of paper with measurements that are a bit off or scribbled in pencil. We help them figure out how many slabs they actually need for their floors. Rain is the only time we slow down because the marble gets slippery and it’s dangerous to move heavy things. We spend that time cleaning the office or checking the inventory books to see what’s left. My brother and I run the day-to-day stuff. We usually have lunch around two, sitting on the edge of a block of unpolished stone. It’s a lot of lifting and sweating, but seeing a finished floor made from our stone makes it feel like we did something good. It’s just a local stone yard.
