If you have ever been to Godown Street in Sowcarpet, you know how crowded it gets. Our place, Ramesh Textiles, is right in the middle of all that noise and movement. It is a tight squeeze with rolls of fabric stacked up almost to the ceiling in every corner. We spend most of our time unrolling cloth for people to look at or packing up orders for the shops nearby in George Town. The light inside isn’t great, but we know where everything is kept even in the dark. It gets very hot in the afternoons, especially when the street outside is blocked with rickshaws and delivery vans. We have been in this part of Sowcarpet for years, and not much has changed about how we do things. We just move the inventory, talk to the regulars, and try to keep the dust off the nicer materials. Sometimes we have to move twenty heavy bundles just to get to the one color a customer wants. It’s hard on the back, but that is how it goes on Godown Street. The floor is always covered in loose threads and scraps of packing plastic. We don't really have time for making things look pretty. It’s a working warehouse first and foremost. People come in, they find what they need for their tailoring or their shops, and we get it out the door as fast as we can. Not much else happens here besides the usual work.
