Working at Bose Handicrafts means being surrounded by a lot of materials and tools. We are located on Elango Street, just behind the Ambika Empire Hotel in Saligramam. It’s Gandhi Nagar, specifically. The shop is on number 4, and it’s a bit of a tight squeeze with all the finished pieces and the raw stuff waiting to be worked on. You can usually hear the sound of someone carving or sanding something if you walk by. There is always a layer of dust on the floor by the end of the day, no matter how much we sweep. It's just the nature of making handicrafts. I’ve spent many years in this spot, and I know every crack in the walls. The light in the back room isn't the best, so we often move the work closer to the front door where the sun comes in. Saligramam is a busy part of town, so there’s always noise from the street, but once you get focused on a piece, you don't notice it much. We make things by hand, so nothing is ever perfectly identical. That's just how it goes when you aren't a factory. Sometimes a project takes a few days, other times it's weeks of slow work. We keep our tools sharp and our heads down. It’s a simple life here on Elango Street, just making things that people might like to have in their homes.
