Om Muruga Tiles & Granites is at 4/4, Jawaharlai Nehru Road in Vadapalani. Being on such a busy road means there is never a quiet moment. We spend our days surrounded by towers of tile boxes and heavy granite slabs leaning against the walls. The dust from the road mixes with the stone dust, so we are always dusting things off. It is a lot of manual labor, carrying boxes to the back of people’s cars or loading up trucks for bigger jobs. We don't really do much talking, mostly just showing people the different shades of grey and brown we have in stock. The floor of the shop is usually covered in a thin layer of sand. Sometimes the power goes out and we just sit outside for a bit until it comes back on. It is a simple life here. We know most of the other shop owners on this stretch. We eat our lunch sitting on the edge of a granite slab most days. People come in looking for something specific, and we help them dig through the stacks. It is not a polished place. It is just a working shop where we handle heavy things. Every day is pretty much the same, but that is fine with us. We just keep track of the stock and make sure everything is where it should be.
