Our yard is located near the Onion Market on Poonamallee High Road. If you are driving by Nerkundram, you can’t really miss the big slabs of stone leaning against the walls. We handle a lot of marble and granite here. It’s heavy work, and our clothes are usually covered in stone dust by midday. We get loads coming in from different quarries and then we have to sort them out by color and quality. It’s not a quiet place. There is always the sound of cranes or trucks moving things around. People come in looking for flooring for their new houses or maybe just a piece for a kitchen counter. We show them what we have on the lot. Sometimes the pieces have natural cracks or patterns people don't like, so we have to move things around with the forklift to find the right slab. It’s physically demanding. My back usually aches by the evening. We don't really have a big office, just a small desk where we do the bills and take phone calls. It’s mostly about the stone. We’ve been at these plots, No. 2 and 3, for quite a while now. The traffic on the high road is always a mess, which makes getting the delivery trucks out a bit of a challenge. But we manage. It’s just honest work with natural materials. Every piece of marble is different, which keeps it interesting I guess. You never know what pattern is going to be inside a block until you cut it open.
