M. A. Jacobs Carpets & Furnishings Co. sits over at New No. 118-A on Cathedral Road. It is an old part of the city, and we have been part of the landscape here for a long time. The building has its quirks, like the way the door sticks a bit in the humidity, but it has character. When you walk in, you will notice piles of carpets and rolls of fabric everywhere because we do not believe in hiding the work away in a back room. It smells a bit like wool and old wood in here, which I think is a good thing. We spend our mornings sorting through different textures and patterns, mostly just trying to keep things organized while customers pop in and out. It is not a high-pressure environment. We usually have the radio playing low in the background while we chat with whoever stops by. Cathedral Road is always busy, so there is a constant hum of engines outside that we barely notice anymore. Some of the furniture in the back has been with us since the start, and it is a bit worn down at the edges, much like us. We do not use any big words to describe what we do. We just sell rugs and furnishings and try to be honest about what looks good. It is a steady life, and we like the people who come through our doors.
