Our place is right at No. 192 N. V. N. Nagar. If you know Anna Nagar in Thirumangalam, you know it can get a bit loud with the motorbikes and the shops nearby. We handle a lot of heavy stone here, and that keeps us busy from the time we open until we lock up. It’s hard on the back, but we’re used to the weight of the slabs by now. The yard is filled with pieces leaning against each other in long rows. Some are polished to a shine, while others are still rough from the quarry. We spend a lot of time checking the edges for any chips or cracks. Water is always running somewhere to wash off the dust so a visitor can see the patterns clearly. The office is small, just tucked into the corner of the lot. We’ve got a couple of old chairs for visitors to sit in while we talk. People usually come in looking for something for a kitchen or a bathroom floor. We just show them whatever we have in the back. Sometimes they bring their kids, and we have to tell them to stay close because the slabs are heavy. We’ve been here in Thirumangalam for a good stretch of time. You get to know the other shop owners on the street. We share news about the road repairs or when the power might go out. It’s a steady kind of life.
