Haveli Marbles & Granites

Haveli Marbles & Granites is right at 100, Poonamallee High Road in Madhuravoyal. If you know that road, you know it’s one of the main ways in and out of the city, so there’s constant movement. Our yard is filled with various types of granite and marble slabs leaned up against each other. It’s quite a sight when the sun hits the polished surfaces, though most of the time they’re covered in a bit of road grit. We spend a lot of time cleaning the stones so customers can see what they’re actually buying. The work is mostly about physical labor, unloading the heavy trucks that come in from the quarries and then loading them back up for deliveries to local building sites. My clothes are always a bit damp from the water we use to wash the slabs. We don't have a big marketing team or anything like that; it’s just us and the stones. People stop by on their way home, looking for a piece of granite for a small renovation or a whole house. We just walk them around and show them what’s in stock. Sometimes we don’t have exactly what they want, so we tell them when the next truck is coming. It’s a straightforward business, no frills, just heavy stone and a lot of work in the Chennai heat. That is just how it goes.
