You’ll find Double Gear over on Muthumary Chetty Street in the Mannady area of Broadway. It’s one of those narrow streets where things are always a bit crowded. Our shop is at No. 7/1. It’s an old building, and space is definitely at a premium. We’ve had to get creative with how we store our tools and equipment. The walls are made of old brick and you can feel the history of the neighborhood when you’re inside. Mannady is a busy place with lots of small businesses and people moving goods back and forth. We mostly focus on gears and mechanical parts, hence the name. There’s always a rhythmic clinking sound in the shop from someone hammering or adjusting a metal component. It’s dark inside compared to the bright street, but we like it that way. We have a small stool by the door where we sit when things slow down for a minute. The air smells like gear oil and old metal. We don’t have a website or any of that, we just rely on people walking by or regulars who have been coming to this street for years. Sometimes the rain floods the street a bit, and we have to put boards down to walk on, but we just keep working through it. It’s just how things go in this part of Broadway. We do our bit and then close up the shutters at night.
