Alagappa Engg Company

Alagappa Engg Company is situated on Rukmani Street in Westmambalam, Chennai. The address can be a bit confusing because we have both a new number, 13, and an old number, 29. Most of the old-timers in the area still use the old number when they give directions. Westmambalam is a very traditional part of the city, and Rukmani Street is a typical narrow lane with houses and small businesses all mixed together. Our workshop is on the ground floor. It’s filled with the smell of machine oil and the sound of metal being worked on. We’ve been here for many years, so we’ve seen the neighborhood change quite a bit around us. It used to be much quieter, but now there are more scooters and cars everywhere. The building itself is quite old and has that classic Chennai character. We don't have any air conditioning in the work area, just big industrial fans that move the hot air around. We mostly do small engineering jobs and custom work for people who come in. It’s a messy place with tools hanging on the walls and metal shavings on the floor. We don't have a fancy office for meetings; we usually just talk to customers right there in the middle of the shop. It’s a practical, no-nonsense environment. We just do our work, close up in the evening, and head home like everyone else.
