Our shop, Aishwarya Textiles, is at New No. 3 on Kambar Street in Mehta Nagar. It is a quiet residential street for the most part, so we do not get the huge crowds you see in the main markets. That works for us though. We have a lot of local ladies and tailors who come by to look at the fabrics we have in stock. The shop is small and filled from floor to ceiling with different materials. We have got cottons, silks, and synthetic fabrics all mixed together. Sometimes you have to dig a bit to find what you want. We have a long wooden counter where we measure out the cloth with a metal yardstick that has been around forever. The edges are a bit worn down, but it still works. We do not have any computer systems for our sales; we just write everything down in a big register with a blue pen. It is a very old-fashioned way of doing things, but it keeps us on our toes. The light inside is a bit dim, but we have some fluorescent tubes that help when the sun goes down. We have been here on Kambar Street for a long time, and we have seen the neighborhood change quite a bit. Despite that, our little textile shop stays pretty much the same. We just enjoy the daily chats with our regular customers and the smell of fresh starch.
