Aathi Emu Farms

You can find us at No. 13 in Valasaravakkam, which is pretty close to the HDFC Bank. It’s a bit unusual to have an emu farm in a place like this, but we make it work. Aathi Emu Farms started because we were interested in these birds and what they can provide. It is not like a traditional farm with rolling hills; it’s more of a focused urban setup. The birds are big and can be a bit noisy, which usually surprises the neighbors who aren't used to them. We spend a lot of time feeding them and making sure their enclosures are clean. It’s a messy job and you definitely can't wear nice clothes to work. We don't have a professional storefront or a sales team. If you want to talk to us, you usually have to find us out back with the animals. We sell various products derived from the emus, and people mostly find us through word of mouth. It’s a niche business, and we like it that way. Every day is a bit different because animals are unpredictable. Sometimes we are dealing with eggs, other times it’s the oil or the meat. It’s just us doing something a bit different in the middle of the city. We don't make it sound fancier than it is. It takes a lot of patience to deal with these birds, but we have gotten used to their ways over the years.
