Sona Crafts Of India

You can find us at 53 A/5 on Rama Road. Sona Crafts Of India is where we spend most of our waking hours. It’s more of a workshop than a showroom, really. We have stacks of wood and metal and various fabrics lying around depending on what we are making that week. There are about six of us who work here regularly. It’s a lot of handwork, so it takes time and there is always a bit of a mess on the floor. Sawdust, threads, and small bits of stone are everywhere. We make decorative items and some smaller furniture pieces that people seem to like. Rama Road is a busy stretch, so there is always the sound of horns and trucks passing by our windows. We don't have a big marketing team or anything like that. We just make the items, pack them up in old newspapers and boxes, and send them out to whoever ordered them. Sometimes a customer will drop by to see how their piece is coming along, and we’ll offer them some chai while they wait. The building is an older one, and the stairs are a bit narrow, but it serves us well. We’ve been doing this for many years now. It’s not always easy, but we like working with our hands and seeing something finished at the end of the day. It beats sitting in a cubicle, at least for those of us who work here.
