If you know Kucha Mahajani in Delhi, you know how it is. It’s loud and the lanes are so narrow you can barely walk some days. Our place, Shantinath Jewellers Llp, is right there at 1157/1124 on the ground floor. We spend most of our mornings just opening up the shutters and dusting off the counters because the dust in Old Delhi never really stops. It's a family thing, mostly. We sit here, drink some chai from the corner stall, and wait for people to drop by. Some days it’s packed and other days we just chat with the neighbors about the gold prices or the weather. The lights inside are a bit bright, maybe too bright, but you need that to see the small details on the pieces. We don’t have a big fancy showroom with a doorman. It’s just us and the safe. Sometimes the fans make a bit of noise, but we’re used to it. The address 110006 is basically where all the action is for jewelry, so we wouldn't want to be anywhere else even if it's a bit chaotic. We’ve had the same desk for years and it’s got scratches on it, but it works fine for what we do. It’s just a regular shop where we do our work and try to keep things moving. We usually close up when the sun goes down and the market starts to quiet a bit. It’s been a long time since we started here.
