Satish Hair Cutting Saloon sits along the Bidisha Road in the Bhanpur area of Bhopal. It’s a straightforward spot on a very busy stretch of road. All day long, cars and buses go flying past the front door, making a lot of noise. The shop itself is pretty simple. I have a couple of chairs and a shelf where I keep the combs and the razors. There’s no air conditioning, just the breeze that comes in when the traffic slows down. I started this place a long time ago, and the furniture has definitely seen better days. The floor is concrete, and I spend a lot of time sweeping it because the hair piles up fast on a Saturday. People from Bhanpur know me, and they stop by whenever they need a trim or just to say hello while they’re out running errands. It’s a small space, so if more than two people are waiting, they usually just stand outside on the pavement and talk. There’s a small mirror near the door that’s slightly cracked at the corner, but you can still see yourself just fine. It’s not a place for anything complicated. Just a haircut, a bit of talk about the local news, and then they go on their way down Bidisha Road. That is how the days go by for us.
