You can find D K Salons over at Shiv Mandir Chowk in Bairagarh. Being near the temple means we hear the bells and see the crowds during festival times. It’s a good spot to be in Bhopal. The shop itself is nothing out of the ordinary. We have a few chairs and big mirrors that we try to keep clean. The lighting is okay, just standard tubes on the ceiling. We spend our days cutting hair and chatting with whoever comes in. Since we are at Shiv Mandir Chowk, we get a lot of people who are just passing through the area. The shop can get quite dusty because of all the activity at the junction, so we spend a fair bit of time sweeping. We have a little shelf where we keep our combs, powders, and creams. Everything is used every day. We don’t have a receptionist or anything like that. You just walk in, and if a chair is free, you sit down. If not, you wait a bit. It’s a very casual environment. Most of us have been doing this for years, so we don’t really need to think about it too much anymore. It’s just an honest way to earn a living in this part of Bhopal. We close up when the street starts to get quiet at night. It’s been our routine for a long time.
