Out in Satrakanara, near the Baghbar area of Barpeta, you will find Jania Anchalik Farmer Producer Company. Anowar Hossain, who is Palan Miah’s son, is where we usually gather to figure things out. This part of Barpeta has always been about the land. We have quite a few members now, all local folks from the surrounding villages. We deal with the daily struggles of farming, like pests or the price of seeds. It’s not a glamorous job, but it is what we know. We started this company to give ourselves a bit more stability. When you are just one farmer, it is hard to get a fair deal. Together, we can at least talk to the buyers with more confidence. The office is really just a room in the village where we keep our records. We spend most of our time outside anyway. The ground here is good if you treat it right. We share tips on what works and what doesn't. Some of the older men have a lot of stories about how things used to be. We try to listen to them. It is important to keep those traditions alive while we try to navigate the current market. We are just ordinary people trying to do right by our neighbors and our land in Satrakanara. It gets busy during the harvest, but we always make time to help one another out with the heavy lifting.
