Our workshop is over at Rajkamal Estate. If you know the Soni Ni Chawl bridge in Rakhial, we are right there. It’s a bit noisy with all the sawing and hammering going on. My father started this years ago. I spent my childhood around wood shavings and the smell of polish. We don't have a big showroom with air conditioning. It’s mostly just the work area and a small space to sit. There's always sawdust on the floor no matter how much we sweep. We make tables and chairs and cupboards mostly. Sometimes it takes longer than we say because a machine breaks or someone is out sick. We just work with our hands and a few old tools. The traffic near the bridge gets really bad in the evenings, so we usually stay late to avoid it. It’s a dusty job but we like it. We know most of the other shop owners around the estate. We share tools sometimes. It’s a tight space but we manage. Some of the wood we get is better than others. We just use what we have and try to make it sturdy. People come in looking for something that won't fall apart. We don't use any fancy sales talk here. You see what we are making right there on the floor. It’s honest work. Sometimes my hands are covered in stain by the end of the day. We have an old radio that plays music while we work. It helps pass the time when we have a big order to finish.
