S.D. Metal Works

Our shop, S.D. Metal Works, is tucked away in the Bindapur Industrial Area. If you find the Allahabad Bank in Uttam Nagar, you’re basically there. We are at 38-B/1. It’s a tight space, but we make it work. Every morning starts with the sound of the metal shutters going up and the smell of cut iron filling the air. It’s not a quiet neighborhood, that’s for sure. There are workshops all around us, and everyone is busy doing their own thing. We spend our time bending, cutting, and welding whatever the current order calls for. Our tools are well-worn and have been in our hands for a long time. It’s just a few of us here. We don't have a receptionist or a lobby. If the door is open, someone is working. Sometimes the power goes out, and we all just sit outside on plastic chairs and wait for it to come back, talking about nothing in particular. The floor is usually covered in metal shavings by noon. We sweep up at the end of the day, but it’s all back the next morning. It’s hard work, and your hands get dirty, but it feels good to see something finished at the end of the week. People from the area know us by the noise we make. We’ve been at this spot for a while now and don't plan on moving anytime soon. It’s home for us, even with the noise and the grit.
