Uma Granite

You can find us in Pratap Nagar, right near Jalaram Timber. It is a dusty part of town because of all the wood and stone being moved around. We deal with granite slabs of all different colors and sizes. Most of our day is spent outside or in the open shed area. It’s heavy work. We use cranes and rollers to shift the stones so people can see the patterns. There is always the sound of a saw or a grinder somewhere nearby. We get covered in stone dust by lunch time. We usually just wash our faces at the tap and keep going. The sun gets really hot on the stone slabs, so we try to do the heaviest moving in the early morning. It’s a straightforward business. People come in looking for something for their kitchen or floors and we show them what we have in the yard. We don't have a fancy showroom, just the slabs leaning against the walls. The ground is covered in gravel and small chips of rock. We have an old table where we write down the measurements and the prices. It’s been this way for years. We just focus on getting the stone out to the trucks without breaking anything. The neighbors at the timber yard are good people and we often share a quick meal during the afternoon break. It's a hardworking corner of the city and we fit right in with the rest of them.
