Alankar Marbles

Working at Plot No. 990 in the Gidc Ind. Estate means dealing with a lot of dust and noise. Alankar Marbles has been here for a good while. We deal with big slabs of stone, mostly marble, and it’s a lot of heavy moving. The 2a-4 section of the plot is where we keep most of the stock. It’s a bit of a maze back there with all the different pieces leaned up against each other. We don’t have a sleek showroom with bright lights. Instead, you just walk through the rows of stone and see what’s there. Sometimes we get some really nice pieces in, and other times it's just the standard stuff people use for floors. It’s a noisy place because there is always some cutting or polishing going on somewhere nearby. We usually have a few guys working the saws. My clothes are always covered in that fine white dust that comes from cutting marble. It gets everywhere. We just try to keep the inventory organized so we can find things when a customer asks. It’s not always easy keeping track of every slab. The industrial estate is busy, and there are trucks coming and going all the time. We’ve gotten used to the rhythm of the place. It’s a straightforward business, really. We buy stone, we store it, and we sell it. No bells or whistles. We have been here through the heat and the rain, just doing the same work every single day.
