If you come down to Plot No-32 in the Gidc Estate, you will find H. R. Patel Granites Pvt. Ltd. The first thing you will notice is the dust, as there is really no way to avoid it when you are working with stone all day. We have these massive slabs of granite stacked up everywhere, leaning against the walls and sitting on heavy wooden pallets. The sounds of the saws cutting through the rock are quite loud, so we usually have to shout a bit to be heard. I spend my days supervising the loading and unloading of the trucks that come in from the quarries. It’s heavy, difficult work, and you have to be careful where you step. My boots are always covered in a fine grey powder by the time I head home. We aren't trying to be the most polished company out there; we just focus on getting the slabs cut to the right size. The Gidc area is always humming with activity, and we are just one part of that bigger picture. Sometimes the water sprayers we use to keep the dust down stop working, and we have to pause everything to fix the pipes. It’s a messy business but there is something satisfying about seeing a rough block of stone turn into a smooth piece of granite. We’ve been at this plot for quite a while and have seen the estate change over the years. It’s just how we make our living.
