Waghodia G.I.D.C. is a huge place and we’ve been at plot 415 for a long time. Shree Chandra Tiles Factory is basically a place of heat and dust. Making tiles involves a lot of steps and none of them are particularly clean. We spend a lot of time watching the kilns and making sure the temperature stays where it needs to be. You can hear the tiles clinking against each other as they get moved around the floor. It’s a rhythmic sound that stays in your head even after you go home. Our workers are mostly local people who have been with us through many seasons. We aren't trying to be the biggest factory in the industrial estate, just a place that does the work every day. People come by the office asking for specific patterns or colors. We show them what we’ve got stacked up in the back. Sometimes the colors vary a little from one batch to the next because that’s just how the clay and the heat work together. It’s not a perfect science. The yard is usually full of crates ready to be shipped out. We don’t use any big words to describe what we do. We just make tiles. It’s a lot of standing on your feet and lifting heavy trays. By the end of the shift, everyone is ready to head home and get the dust off. That’s just how life is here in Waghodia.
