Down in Amaravathi Nagar, Udumalpet, you’ll find Sainik School. It’s a bit of a trek to get out here, but it’s quiet and away from the city noise. The campus is quite large with plenty of open space for the cadets to move around. We start early here, usually before the sun is even fully up, and you can hear the sounds of drills echoing across the grounds. The buildings are sturdy and have that old-fashioned look to them. We spend a lot of time outdoors because the weather in Udumalpet allows for it most of the year, though it can get very dry. The dormitories are kept very neat, or at least we try to keep them that way. Everyone has a routine they follow, from the morning exercises to the evening study sessions. It’s not like a regular day school where everyone goes home at 4 PM. We live and work here together. The mess hall is where everyone gathers for meals, and it’s probably the loudest part of the day. We have some trees that provide shade, which is a relief when the sun is out. Life here is about discipline and just doing what needs to be done. It’s a long day for everyone, but we’re used to the pace and the way things are run around here. We just focus on the daily tasks and the training that needs to happen.
