Down in Kottur, near Pollachi, our school is tucked away in a place that’s surrounded by a lot of greenery. It feels a bit different from the schools in the middle of a big city. We have a lot of students who come from the surrounding farming areas. The morning air is usually quite fresh before the sun gets too high. Our building is spread out, and the classrooms have big windows to let the breeze in. We don’t have fancy air conditioning, so we rely on the fans and the natural air. The school bell is an old metal one that someone hits with a hammer to mark the periods. You can hear it ringing across the yard. The teachers here have been around for years, and many of them taught the older brothers and sisters of the current students. It’s a very tight-knit community. During the rainy season, the ground gets a bit muddy and we have to remind the kids not to run too fast. We have a simple playground with some goal posts and a net for volleyball. Most of the furniture is made of wood and has been repaired many times over the years. We just focus on the daily lessons and making sure the students are ready for their tests. It’s a quiet life, mostly, and we like the way things go at their own pace in our corner of Pollachi.
