Thuraiyur Pengal Farmer Producer Company Limited is at 102, Thiyagi Singaravelar Street in Thuraiyur, Trichy. The word "Pengal" means women, and that is exactly who we are. We are a bunch of local women farmers who thought it would be better to work as one group. We have lived around here forever and know the fields quite well. Our office is a plain room on a regular street where we do all the boring business stuff. It is very different from being out in the soil, but we have to do it to get decent prices for our crops. We handle things like pulses and grains, depending on what we planted that year. There isn't any corporate structure here; it is usually just a few of us at a table with some notebooks and a phone that rings too much. We talk about the rain, how the soil is doing, and the cost of diesel. Sometimes things get a bit messy because we are still figuring out how to run a real company, but we always make it work in the end. We aren't trying to be some massive corporation. We just want to make sure the women in our village can take care of their families through their farming. It is honest work, and we do it with help from our neighbors and friends right here in the Thuraiyur area. It feels right to do it this way.
