Variety Foods

The shop stays pretty crowded most afternoons here in Kandivali East. We have bags of stuff piled up almost to the ceiling because there is never enough room for everything we want to keep in stock. Post Kathor 14 is a busy area, so there is always noise from the street coming through the open door. We spend a lot of time just unpacking crates and putting things on the shelves where people can reach them. Sometimes the labels are a bit crooked, but the food is fresh and that is what matters. My cousin helps out when he is not busy, and we usually have the radio playing some old songs in the background. It is not a big place, so you have to squeeze past the grain sacks if you want to get to the back. We have been here long enough that we know what the families around here like to buy for dinner. It gets hot in the summer because the fans just move the warm air around, but we stay open anyway. We do not have a website or anything like that, we just open the shutters in the morning and wait for people to stop by. Sometimes we run out of things faster than we expected, and then we have to wait for the next truck to arrive from the distributor. It is a lot of lifting and carrying, but it is just what we do every day to keep the shelves full.
