About Village Craft – Housewares & Supplies in Surat
You can find Village Craft tucked away near the Gateway Hotel at Ambika Niketan on Athwa Lines. It’s a bit of an unusual spot for a workshop, but it works for us. We spend our days surrounded by all sorts of materials, mostly things we’ve sourced locally. It’s a hands-on kind of place. There is usually dust on the floors and bits of thread or wood shavings scattered around. We don't really follow a strict corporate schedule; things happen when they happen. If a project takes longer because the material isn't behaving, we just take the extra time. People who visit often comment on the piles of half-finished work we have sitting in the corners. We aren't trying to mass-produce anything in a factory. It’s just a few of us who enjoy the process of making things by hand. The light in the morning is great for the detailed work, so we try to get the hardest bits done then. Sometimes we get distracted chatting with the people passing by from the hotel. It’s a friendly atmosphere. We don't have any fancy mission statements or big goals of world dominance. We just want to make stuff that looks decent and lasts a while. It’s a quiet life, mostly, interrupted by the occasional rush of orders. We just take it day by day and see what we can finish before the sun goes down.
