S K Masala

S K Masala is based right on Ghod Dod Road, which is one of the busiest streets in this part of Surat. If you walk past our place, you can usually smell the spices being ground up from quite a distance away. It’s a very strong scent that stays on your clothes and in your hair all day long. The shop isn't very large, but we have sacks of different spices piled up everywhere you look. We spend a lot of our time weighing out powders and sealing up small bags for the customers who stop by. Ghod Dod Road always has a lot of people shopping and cars looking for parking spaces, so it’s never really quiet outside our door. We have a lot of regular customers who have been coming to us for years and won't go anywhere else for their masala. It’s a bit of a messy job because the fine spice dust gets on everything, including the glass counters and the floor. We are constantly sweeping up to try and keep it somewhat tidy for the next person who walks in. Some days the heat makes the smell even stronger, but we’ve gotten used to it over time. We don’t have any fancy marketing or big glowing signs, just the name S K Masala and the jars of stuff we sell on the shelves. It’s a straightforward business. We just focus on getting the right mix for the people who come in every day.
