Kalpataru Super Market

Being in Suvali, things are a bit different than the center of the city. Kalpataru Super Market is where I spend most of my time. It’s a grocery store, but we call it a super market because we have a lot of different things for the kitchen. Bags of rice are stacked up near the entrance. I have to be careful when I move them so I don't hurt my back. The shelves are filled with oil, spices, and cleaning supplies. I try to keep everything organized, but customers move things around and I have to fix it later. Suvali gets a nice breeze sometimes, but the shop can still get stuffy. I have a small stool behind the counter. My knees get tired from standing all day. We get our stock from the big trucks that come twice a week. It takes a long time to check all the boxes and make sure nothing is broken or leaking. I’ve seen kids grow up in this neighborhood, coming in first for candy and now for milk for their own homes. It’s a steady kind of work. I don’t think about expanding or anything like that. I just want to make sure the shelves are full and the lights stay on for the people who live nearby. When the sun goes down, I pull the shutters and go home to my family.
