Living and working in Surat means you get used to the pace of the city pretty fast. Ambika Vijay Hotel sits at 5/813 and it is just a regular spot where people come through when they need a place to stay. The entrance is right there on the street, and the sound of scooters going by never really stops. Inside, it is usually a bit cooler than the sidewalk in the sun. Simple furniture is set up so people can sit down for a bit in the lobby. The staff usually wears plain clothes and we spend most of our time cleaning up after the morning rush or getting ready for the next group of people to check in. It is not like those big hotels you see in the center of town. We handle the keys and the rooms and try to keep the hallways clear of any clutter. Sometimes the water pressure is a little low, but we fix it when we can. Most guests are just looking for a place to sleep while they are traveling or doing business in the area. We see a lot of familiar faces from time to time. The light in the lobby is a bit yellow, and the curtains are thick to keep the heat out. It is just a simple building at the end of the day. We keep the registers and the books behind the counter and wait for the next guest to arrive.
