Out here at the 38-39 KM stone on G.T. Karnal Road, things move pretty fast. Being in Rai means we are surrounded by a lot of other big places and warehouses. The road is always packed with trucks carrying all sorts of stuff up and down the highway. Dust gets everywhere, especially in the summer months when the wind picks up. We’ve been at this spot for some time now. You can’t miss it if you’re driving toward the city. The gate is usually open by eight and we start seeing the staff trickle in. Most of us take the bus or ride our bikes if we live nearby. It’s a big site, so there’s always something going on. Fancy talk isn't really our thing. There is always a list of things to get done before the shift ends. Weather makes it hard sometimes, like when the monsoon rain floods the edges of the road. But we just keep at it. Hindustan Lever Ltd has been a part of this landscape for years. We see the same faces every day at the little food stalls near the entrance. It’s a busy life, mostly just keeping track of everything coming in and out. The highway noise is like background music to us now. Even when it’s quiet inside, you can still feel the rumble of the traffic from the road outside. We just stay focused on the task.
