Down in Sawantwadi, at a place called Madura, you’ll find the Sindhudurga Mahila Farmer Producercompany Limited. We are at House Number 126. This is a beautiful part of Sindhudurg with lots of trees, but the work is still hard and tiring. We are a group of women who decided to join together to handle our farming business better. It gets lonely and difficult working a plot of land by yourself. When we are together, we can share tools and ideas about the crops. We aren't fancy people. Most of us spend our days in the fields and then come to the office to handle the company stuff later. The office is just a simple room in the village where we keep our books. We talk about what crops are doing well and how we can get them to the market without losing too much money to the middleman. It’s a lot of learning for us every day. We have to deal with taxes and registrations, which can be a real headache. But we do it because it’s better than the alternative. We want our children to have a better life, and this is one way to make that happen. In Madura, everyone knows each other, so we try to be as helpful as we can. We aren't some big city firm. We are just mothers and sisters working the land. It’s slow work, but it’s ours. That’s what matters.
