Our office for Colors Of India Tours is located in Khalini, a part of Shimla. Being up here in the Himalayas means things move a bit differently. We are a small team working out of a room that overlooks the valley. It's a nice view, though we are often too busy with paperwork to look at it much. We handle tours, but we aren't a big, cold corporation despite the "Pvt. Ltd." in our name. We are just local people who know the roads and the hotels. Our space is filled with old files and a couple of computers that sometimes act up. We don't have a fancy reception area with someone waiting to greet you. Usually, you'll just find one of us on the phone or drinking tea. We spend our time trying to coordinate with drivers and making sure the timings work out for the guests. Sometimes things go wrong, like a landslide blocking a road, and then we have to spend the whole night figuring out a new plan. It can be stressful, but we've been doing this long enough that we don't panic. We don't use scripted speeches when people call. We just talk like normal people. We want folks to see the real Shimla and the surrounding areas, not just the stuff in the brochures. It keeps us busy and the tea keeps us going through the long winters.
