Om Muruga Bricks

If you find yourself on Malai Kovil Road in Karumapuram, you will probably see our stacks of bricks piled up. We are quite near the main road in Ayothiyapattinam, so it is not too hard to find us. We called it Om Muruga Bricks and we’ve been at this spot for quite a few years now. It is a family thing, really. We don't have a website or any of those modern things. We just have the yard and the bricks. The road outside can get quite muddy when it rains, which makes it hard for the trucks to get in, but we manage. We handle the whole process ourselves, from the raw earth to the finished product. It is a lot of heavy lifting. My kids sometimes help out when they aren't in school, but mostly it is just the regular crew. We aren't trying to be the biggest in the state. We just want to supply the folks around Karumapuram and the nearby villages. People know they can just walk in and talk to us. We don't use any fancy talk. We just show them the bricks and tell them the price. Sometimes we have a coffee together if there is time. It’s a slow life in some ways, but the work never really stops. There is always another batch to fire or another load to move. We are just glad to be working and staying busy in our own little corner.
